Course description
This two-day course presents a discriminating and scientific approach to the examination and treatment of the shoulder. A global view will be described, including analysis of the mechanics of all the joints of the shoulder complex and how they contribute to the various pathologies. The importance of differential diagnosis will be emphasized and the latest research constantly referred to, including that conducted by the tutor at Southampton University, with a clear distinction between what is fact and what is theory. The effectiveness and scientific basis for many of the common physiotherapeutic interventions will be assessed, and a distinction drawn between those patients we can and, crucially, those patients we cannot help with physiotherapy. It is a challenging and questioning course with many of our cosy and traditional notions of the shoulder held up to critical examination. The course is highly interactive with a large practical component. A variety of teaching methods will be used to try to keep everyone buoyed as well as educated, including surgical videos, computer graphics, case studies and patient presentations. An up to date 87-page course booklet, containing over 210 references, is included in the course fee.
